about

Part 1 of my 12-part 2014 songwriting homework assignment entitled "The Garage Demos". One song per month (written, recorded, and released in demo form), created within the environment of an iPad using the GarageBand application. A combination of live instrumentation as well as loops and samples will be used to present twelve new songs within one calendar year. Each song will be presented as a "demo", and may or may not reflect the direction where the song will eventually go. Ideally, these songs will be a blueprint for what I hope will be my proper sophomore studio album, following 2012's "Phases".

"Phoenix" has been sitting around as a "half-song" for several years now. It has been rehearsed with my band as such, and could very well make its way into the live repertoire now that it is complete. A song about embracing a fresh start, and cutting ties with a destructive path. An ideal song to start this series with (and not at all reflective of my personal life). This demo version incorporates a heavy piano arrangement which will most likely be exclusive to this recording.

lyrics

I tried to tell you, but you went away
The thought of losing touch was real
And so I welcomed your unforgiveness
And made myself a happy home

Now you're living within your freedom
You got no one here to answer to
Yet, all I'm hearing is the same old nonsense
Yeah, how could I ever forsake you?

All the times you'd run and hide
All the demons you keep inside
Do they really comfort you?

Don't you put me in your tree
Hangin' 'round for the world to see
I'm a Phoenix on the rise
Not second prize

On our deathbed, remote control
Are we as hopeless as we seem?
Within your promise, without a reason
With nothing left to do but dream

Testing, testing, should you be resting?
The time at hand is yours to lose
What you wish for would overcome me
But, there were always two of you

All the times you'd run and hide
All the demons you keep inside
Do they really comfort you?

Don't you put me in your tree
Hangin' 'round for the world to see
I'm a Phoenix on the rise
Not second prize
