about

Part 5 of my 12-part 2014 songwriting homework assignment entitled "The Garage Demos". One song per month (written, recorded, and released in demo form), created within the environment of an iPad using the Garageband application. A combination of live instrumentation as well as loops and samples will be used to present twelve new songs within one calendar year. Each song will be presented as a "demo", and may or may not reflect the direction where the song will eventually go. Ideally, these songs will be a blueprint for what I hope will be my proper sophomore studio album, following 2012's "Phases".

This is a drastic re-write of a song that I wrote twenty years ago during the height of the grunge movement. Originally, it featuring no chorus and lyrics that were quite literally about being stuck in traffic (a tragedy, indeed). Nearly two decades later, the song was unearthed... and the crude original demo I made as a member of the Garage Salesmen was played for the other members of the Dave Rayburn Project. Everyone seemed to like the tune a lot, and so we rehearsed it and even played it live a time or two.

DRP guitarist Gary Fitch suggested that it needed a chorus and maybe a story about the pursuit of a girl (classic Springsteen). Hesitant at first... I finally gave in and gave this song some new life two decades later. Fitch gets a co-write on this one as he championed it's resurrection. I hope it stands taller than it did when I was listening to the sounds of Seattle.

On a side note... it acts as the flip side to my April demo, "The Beat Of Your Heart". The tables do turn.

lyrics

She's in my head every night about this time.
Thinking of the distance and the things we left behind.
Sifting through the memories of what we once had.
These broken dreams are driving me mad.

Traffic... to ease my worried brow.
Traffic... gotta get to her somehow.
Traffic... I've got to see this through.
Gotta quell my pride and take that ride... it's all that I can do.

Day after day. Night after night.
Under the spell of the red tail lights.
Looking for salvation on a road that never ends.
Where the radio is my only friend?

Traffic... to ease my worried brow
Traffic... gotta get to her somehow
Traffic... I've got to see this through
Gotta quell my pride and take that ride... it's all that I can do

Traffic... to ease my worried brow
Traffic... gotta get to her somehow
Traffic... I've got to see this through
Gotta quell my pride and take that ride... it's all that I can do
