"Phases And Changes" is quite likely my signature composition as a songwriter. It came to me naturally, and at a crucial point in my life, with the loss of my father. It towers over any of the fictitious storylines in some of my catalog, and draws heavily on emotional connection... making it something that many listeners have instantly latched onto. I've witnessed eyes tearing up in the crowd as I've played it in a live setting. I've had people approach me after performances and discuss their own correlation to what they just heard. It's a reward that I've been blessed to receive over the years that simply adds to the comfort that the song has provided me along the way. The intention of the song was to convey reassurance from beyond, from the viewpoint of the departed to those who have been left behind, primarily the relationship between parent and child. The words came quickly, as if they weren't even mine, and that's when I knew this was going to be something special.
The idea of the SEVEN PHASES OF CHANGE EP was born just two weeks prior to its release, as a way to pay tribute to my father on the 20th anniversary of his passing. The title (and collective concept) was inspired by a Chet Baker CD called SEVEN FACES OF VALENTINE from 1990 which collects seven unique renditions of his own signature tune, "My Funny Valentine". Here, you get seven unique performances, in various settings, and in varied quality, over the past twenty years, beginning with the original home demo I recorded and concluding with a newly re-imagined recording to mark the occasion.
